To continue the sketch of your still life, do a contour drawing of each form in its basic color.

Now that you have set up the palette and have the whole composition sketched in and evaluated, let’s do a detailed contour drawing of the fruit. Contour drawings are a valuable tool to help you really see what you are looking at. Instead of assuming you know what something looks like, you need to closely observe your subject, noting the subtle changes in color and form that make up this particular object. Experienced painters don’t generally create contour drawings in paint; however, I find them extremely helpful for beginners and you already have each form blocked in to guide you. For this drawing, use your pointed sable brush and dilute the paint with enough medium to make a continuous line.

1. Choose the basic color of each object (red for a red apple, yellow-green for a pear, etc.). Use Yellow Ochre to draw anything yellow.

2. Identify the shape that is farthest back and load your pointed brush with a runny mixture of the basic color of that shape.

3. Focus your attention on a spot at the edge of the object and let your eye follow along the edge, painting that edge on your canvas as you go. Proceed very slowly.

4. Examine each subtle bump or indent along the edge of your object. Even an orange is not perfectly round. Remember, don’t draw what you think is there, draw what you see.

5. After you’ve completed the outline of your first object, add any stems or blossoms (the spot on the fruit that is opposite the stem).

6. Repeat Steps 3–5 with each of the remaining pieces of fruit until you have completed your contour drawing.
